UNISA is headquartered in Pretoria but has no traditional campus to attend — with over 400,000 students, it's one of the world's mega-universities, letting you study from anywhere in South Africa or abroad. Applications for 2027 are online-only — here's exactly what you need, and by when.
About the university
The University of South Africa traces its roots back to the University of the Cape of Good Hope, founded in 1873, and today is the only higher education institution in the country to carry the nation's name. As a distance-education mega-university, UNISA attracts around a third of all higher education students in South Africa, and is the only university of its kind in Africa.
UNISA offers over 400,000 students, including students from 130 countries, a multimodal blend of online and postal study, making higher education accessible to people who cannot attend a traditional contact university. It's also the first tertiary institution in Africa to own an airport.
Good to know
UNISA's online application fee is R150, but it only applies to first-time applicants who don't yet have a UNISA student number — returning students don't pay it again. Popular qualifications and modules can reach capacity before the official closing date, so apply as early as possible.
Plan ahead
UNISA sets a single main window for undergraduate, Honours and postgraduate diploma applications, with a separate, later window for Master's and doctoral qualifications.
The UNISA online application portal opens for undergraduate, Honours and postgraduate diploma applications.
Final date for undergraduate, Honours degree and postgraduate diploma applications for 2027.
A separate, later application period for Master's and doctoral qualifications.
NSFAS applications are separate from the UNISA application and open on their own timeline.
Fully online, no paper forms
UNISA applications are submitted online through myUNISA or the UNISA Student App — there are no regional offices where you can hand in hard copies, and cash payments aren't accepted.
